Surgery, Trauma and ACS Research Program (STAR)
About:
Our research program is aimed to contribute to clinical research efforts
within the Surgery Department at Kern Medical. Research will be focused
on surgical topics that support and promote high quality outcomes in research
designed to enhance medical knowledge in surgery. Our program also aims
to improve clinical practice knowledge and provide research assistants
with invaluable exposure and shadowing opportunities in the following
fields: Orthopedic Surgery, Urological Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Spine
Surgery, Breast Surgery, Neurosurgery, Trauma and Acute Critical Surgery,
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Podiatry, Hand, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology,
Gynecological Surgery, Oncology, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery,
and General Surgery.
Research Assistant Role:
- Development of research questions
- Complete literature review/bibliography
- Achieving IRB approval
- Abstract write-up
- Poster creation and presentation
- Publication submission

Developing methods
- Creating data collection templates, executing data collection
- Statistical analysis of data; statistician available for help
- Discussion and conclusion write-up
- Shadow Principal Investigators (as needed)
Minimum Requirements:
- Commitment: 12 months and 4 hours per week
- Minimum 3.2 GPA in current undergraduate/graduate/post baccalaureate program
- Completion of STAR application
- Resume or C.V.
- Letter of intent (Optional)
- Two letters of recommendation (Optional)
- Interview and acceptance into the program
- Complete the NIH Basic Human Subjects Research Training Course during onboarding
