Since 1934, Kern Medical has been training residents and
health care professionals in our community.

Educational Curriculum

Traditional Didactics

  • Departmental protected didactics with full resident and faculty participation occur every Friday morning
  • Sessions include core lectures by Kern Medical faculty and frequent outside guest speakers from other academic institutions
  • Residents present and defend their OB and GYN cases at the conclusion of each block in an ABOG board-style format
  • Complex cases are presented in a morbidity and mortality format
  • Content is didactics is mapped to the CREOG Educational Objectives, 13th Edition

Simulation Curriculum

  • Residents have protected half-days of simulation built into their schedule throughout the academic year
  • The Kern Medical Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary training center housed within the hospital
  • Simulation drills are performed alongside faculty, nursing and trainees from other residency programs
  • Residents also have access to a simulation lab with laparoscopic and robotic trainers on the labor and delivery floor
  • Third – year residents completed the EMIGS certification program
  • Graduating residents receive an Intuitive da Vinci certification

Wellness Curriculum

  • The program is committed to the overall well-being of all resident physicians
  • The faculty Wellness Champion leads Wellness Sessions that are integrated into the didactics
  • There are quarterly sessions where each PGY class goes out to breakfast with a faculty and participate in a group coaching session
  • Residents are given 3 wellness days each academic year
  • The program enthusiastically participates in ACOG Wellness Week each February
  • All residents are excused from clinical duty for a Wellness Retreat each year
