Since 1934, Kern Medical has been training residents and
health care professionals in our community.

Living Arrangements

Housing

Although housing is not provided by Kern Medical, ample housing is available in Bakersfield. A definite perk when considering Bakersfield is that the rental market is reasonable. A one or two bedroom apartment usually rents for $500 – $1000 per month. A lot of complexes also accept month-to-month contracts, alleviating the need for a lease.

Although listings for apartments and rooms for rent are available, they are not endorsed by the Program. These listings are provided solely for your convenience and should be independently vetted.

Transportation

In Bakersfield, housing is probably not close enough to the hospital to walk, so it’s advisable to have a car. Also, some rotations are located away from campus, making a car a necessity.

Meals

Meal Stipend of $200.00 per bi-weekly pay period included in payroll check and a 20% cafe discount. On-duty meals provided while rotating on campus at Kern Medical during the cafe non-operating hours.
