Since 1934, Kern Medical has been training residents and
health care professionals in our community.

Program Structure

PGY-1: Mandatory Learning Experiences with minimum lengths:

Orientation (3 weeks)
Ambulatory Care (6 weeks)
Internal Medicine (6 weeks)
Infectious Diseases (6 weeks)
Critical Care (6 weeks)
Advanced Internal Medicine (4 weeks)
Administration (4 weeks)
Hospital Practice (4 weeks)

Longitudinal Learning Experiences:
Research Project
Longitudinal Ambulatory Care (½ day a week in an AmCare Clinic setting, in addition to Anticoagulation patients assigned to you for follow up)
Longitudinal Hospital Practice (minimum 8hr per month equivalent of staffing inpatient pharmacy, typically done as two half day shifts per month)


Elective Learning Experiences:
Advanced Ambulatory Care (4-6 weeks)
Advanced Infectious Disease (4-6 weeks)
Emergency Medicine (4-6 weeks)
Oncology (4-6 weeks)
Cardiology (4-6 weeks)
Cardio-Pulmonary (4-6 weeks)

PGY-2: Required Learning Experiences: (duration 52 weeks unless specified otherwise):

  • Orientation (4 weeks)
  • Pharmacotherapy Clinic
  • Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH)
  • Infectious Disease
  • Oncology/Infusion Clinic
  • Administration
  • Research


Elective Learning Experiences: There will be flexibility in the schedule in the second half of the program based on resident interests and needs of the program.
