Emergency Department

We are committed to providing you with the highest quality, most compassionate care and service, quickly and efficiently, from the moment you arrive.

We know how frustrating it can be to wait, especially when you’re in pain or not feeling well, and getting you treated as soon as possible is among our highest priorities. But, if you should have to wait for a while in our comfortably furnished waiting areas, we appreciate your understanding that we must stabilize and treat the most severely ill and injured patients first.

Our Emergency Department treats approximately 48,000 patients each year, and we accept referrals from facilities throughout Kern County. We have six trauma and medical resuscitation bays, 11 monitored beds, four respiratory isolation and gynecologic rooms, and a psychiatric observation room. The department has two spiral, 64-slice CT scanners, and a dedicated radiography suite on-site, with imaging services available 24 hours a day.

If one of our Emergency Department physicians determines that you need to be admitted to the hospital, we make every effort to get you settled into your room as soon as possible. If the specific type of room you need is not available, we’ll make you as comfortable as possible in the Emergency Department until your assigned room becomes available.

Level II Trauma Center in Kern County

The Level II Trauma Center at our hospital is intended for patients with catastrophic injuries threatening life and limb. The Trauma Center was opened in 2001, and is a state-designated Level II Trauma Center, and the only one of its kind between Fresno and Los Angeles. Our local Emergency Medical System (EMS) is also very active in trauma quality monitoring, education, and policy development as they relate to Kern County and state-wide trauma activity. The enhancement of EMS prehospital trauma care, including field triage criteria, is directly proportional to our increase in trauma activity over the last few years.

We treat an average of more than 3,000 trauma patients per year. Some of the trauma services we offer include trauma surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, and more. Our highly skilled, board-certified physicians specialize in complex cases involving tissue injury, infections, acute inflammation, ischemia, and surgical complications. Our surgeons also play an active role in coordinating the patient’s recovery and transition to non-critical care and therapy.
