The Department of Psychiatry at Kern Medical in Bakersfield, California, is a major provider of psychiatric care in Kern County. The Department of Psychiatry provides direct psychiatric services at the Kern Medical Psychiatric Inpatient Unit (IPU at 3B), Consultation and Liaison service at Kern Medical, and outpatient treatment at the Resident Outpatient Clinic (ROC) at Mary K Shell MentalHealth Building, KCMH East Bakersfield Outpatient Childen’s Clinic, Commonwealth Children’s Clinic, Bakersfield VA Outpatient Clinic, James G Boles Juvenile Hall, Blanton Academy, and Lerdo Detention Facility. Through our special relationship with UCLA, trainees may rotate at UCLA affiliated sites including the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, Olive View UCLA Medical Center, and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

The Department offers accredited training for general psychiatry residents and fellowship programs in addiction medicine and child and adolescent psychiatry. The UCLA-Kern Psychiatry Residency Program is a four-year program accredited in 2002 with its first graduating class in 2004. Upon completion, graduates are eligible for board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship is a two-year accredited CAP program available to fourth year psychiatry residents and psychiatry board eligible physicians. The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship is a one-year fellowship offered to recent board eligible graduates. Graduates of these programs are issued two certificates of completion, one from Kern Medical and another from UCLA.
Our top ranked core psychiatry rotations are offered to medical students through the Kern Medical Education Department. Sub-internships for senior medical students are also offered in the inpatient unit, child clinics, and consultation and liaison service.
The UCLA-Kern training programs offer a thorough supervised experience in psychiatric pathologies by exposing them to diverse patients in varied settings. Trainees work alongside motivated peers and experienced colleagues, all under the guidance and instruction of dedicated and experienced faculty.
