health care professionals in our community.

Welcome To The Department Of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry at Kern Medical in Bakersfield, California, is a major provider of psychiatric care in Kern County. The Department of Psychiatry provides direct psychiatric services at Kern Medical and operates the training programs in collaboration with Kern Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. At Kern Medical, inpatient psychiatric service is available at Behavioral Health Unit and psychiatry consultation service is available for emergency department and medical-surgical units of the hospital by the Psychiatry Consultation and Liaison service.

The Department offers accredited training for general psychiatry residents and fellowship programs in child and adolescent psychiatry and in addiction psychiatry. The Psychiatry Residency Program is a four-year program accredited in 2002 with its first graduating class in 2004. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship is a two-year accredited program available to fourth year psychiatry residents and psychiatry board eligible physicians. The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship is a one-year fellowship offered to recent psychiatry board eligible graduates. Graduates of these programs receive two certificates of completion, from Kern Medical and from UCLA. Upon completion, graduates are eligible for board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Our highly desired core psychiatry rotations are offered to medical students through the Kern Medical Department of Education. Sub-internships for senior medical students are also offered in the inpatient unit, children clinics, and in psychiatry consultation and liaison service.

The training programs offer a thorough supervised experience in psychiatric pathologies by exposing them to diverse patients in varied settings. Trainees work alongside motivated peers and experienced colleagues, all under the guidance and instruction of dedicated and experienced faculty.
