Department of Medicine Residency Program
A Message from the Program Director
On behalf of our residents, staff, and faculty, I welcome you to the Kern Medical Internal Medicine Residency program! We are happy you have chosen to explore our program for your graduate medical education.
Our institution and program have a storied history. Kern Medical has served the California Central Valley for almost 150 years. The hospital was founded in 1867 and has continuously been a leader in the care, education, and research needs of our community. The institution has enjoyed an academic affiliation with UCLA since 1981. We have been training residents for more than 85 years and hundreds of our graduates have gone on to serve not only our community but are spread throughout California and the nation.
A few words describe our residents’ values: enthusiasm, competence, compassion, and intellectual curiosity. We have a diverse group of medical professionals who come every day to learn and make a difference in our patients’ lives. Our eight residents per year have varied and interesting life experiences. Together they enrich our institution and community.
Our patient population is diverse (young, old, urban, rural, international) with a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions that span nearly the entire spectrum of medicine. There is little that our residents do not see or manage over the course of their residency experience establishing a foundation for becoming seasoned, confident and experienced Internists. Our program has been continuously accredited for decades by ACGME. The post-graduate career path of our residents include those who pursue a career in General Internal Medicine, become Hospitalists, or go on for future sub-specialty training.
Our faculty have a passion for teaching and a reputation as outstanding clinicians. They strive to create an educational environment that is nurturing yet academically challenging. Our faculty understands that each individual has unique interests and career goals, and enjoy giving personalized attention and mentoring to residents as they discover their potential.
I am proud of the strong sense of community and camaraderie that exists in our department among the staff, students, residents, and faculty at Kern Medical which enriches our learning environment and makes our Internal Medicine program a dynamic and rewarding place to train.
