About Dr. Kavipurapu

Dr. Kiran Kavipurapu (Dr. Kavi) completed a rigorous accelerated study program at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine for both his BS and MPH degrees, graduating top honors. From there, he simultaneously pursued dual doctoral degrees in medicine and law from Western University of Health Sciences and the University of La Verne, College of Law, respectively. With a passion for public health, women’s health, and the integration of the legal and ethical dilemmas pertaining to modern obstetrical and gynecologic care, he wrote his legal thesis entitled “Medical, Legal and Ethical Issues Governing Maternal Rights v. the Health of Children and the Fetus”.

Dr. Kavi continued his medical training at the Kern Medical Center Obstetrics & Gynecology residency program. Upon graduating, he went on to work as an attending physician and faculty at the joint Kaiser Permanente San Diego/ University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Ob/Gyn residency program. There, he became founder and Director of the medical student clinical clerkship program and developed the clinical curriculum from the ground up. He also served on various committees including the GME, Ob/Gyn Clinic Utilization Review Board, and Labor and Delivery Perinatal Safety.

Later, Dr. Kavi took on a unique opportunity to serve as an Academic Hospitalist and faculty physician at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Ob/Gyn Residency program. Within his first 2 months at UCSF, Dr. Kavi was quickly recognized for his clinical and educational endeavors and appointed as the Director of the Clinical Clerkship in Obstetrics in the UCSF School of Medicine. He also was appointed to be the Ob/Gyn division representative to the UCSF Medical Center Medical-Legal Committee, where multi-specialty quality work is done, as well as claims and risk management cases are reviewed at the UC Regents level. He also serves on the Labor & Delivery Quality Committee. In September 2020, Dr. Kavi was awarded the UCSF Ob/Gyn Residency Program’s Outstanding Resident Educator award as nominated by the Ob/Gyn residents.

Aside from his academic involvements at UCSF, he served on various ACOG Committees and is an article reviewer for the Green Journal.

In his spare time, you may see Dr. Kavi riding around horseback, swimming, cooking or even singing and dancing, going back to his roots as a choreographer and professional dancer, being featured on hospital safety music videos such as “Bringing Sepsy Back”, and also performing alongside Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman.

Dr. Kavi is very excited to join the Kern Medical family and continue to pursue his academic passions and help train the next generations of physicians!
