Antoinette C. “Toni” Smith, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer

Toni Smith

As Kern Medical Chief Nursing Officer, Toni Smith is responsible for the full range of nursing services, including those for inpatient and maternal child units, ancillary and outpatient, the emergency department, operative services, and the diagnostic treatment center. She is in charge of nursing efforts for respiratory therapy, laboratory and radiology, quality management, risk management, compliance, social services, home health, and organizational policies.

In her 20 years at Kern Medical, Smith has worked with staff to consistently achieve successful surveys by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. She oversees budgets topping $100 million, has managed nursing aspects of Electronic Medical Records, and has led teams landing valuable health care grants. She is developing the health care system’s Strategic Nursing Plan.

Smith previously served in a variety of positions at San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield, including director of transitional care; the surgical unit; pediatrics; rehab services; and acute, outpatient and primary care.

She has been a part-time faculty member at California State University-Bakersfield, a guest lecturer there and at Bakersfield College and Kern Medical, and a National Council Licensure Examination instructor.

Smith holds an associate nursing degree from Golden West Junior College, Huntington Beach, and Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in nursing from CSU-Bakersfield.

She is certified by the American Nurses Association as a Professional in Healthcare Quality and has a CSU-Bakersfield certificate in Total Quality Management.

She was named Kern RN Society RN of the Year for leadership and recognized by the Sigma Theta Tau Xi Epsilon Society and the Association of California Nurse Leaders for excellence in leadership. She was the CSU-B School of Natural Science and Mathematics 2008 Alumni of the Year.

She is a member of the Kern RN Society and is affiliated with the Xi Epsilon Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, CSU-B Nursing Alumni, the Association of California Nurse Leaders, local and state; the American Academy of Medical Surgical Nursing, the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Bakersfield, CSU-B Nursing Advisory Board, CSU-B Kegley Institute Advisory Board, and JJ’s Legacy Foundation Board.

Smith enjoys volunteering for community and church events.
