Our Department of Pediatrics provides an extensive range of inpatient and outpatient services, from well-child care to the treatment of the most difficult and life-threatening illnesses. Our pediatric faculty based at Kern Medical includes cardiology, hematology/oncology, and neonatology. Specialty clinics are also provided at our Sagebrush location by consultants from the UCLA School of Medicine in the areas of cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and hematology/oncology. Our pediatric and neonatology faculty also actively participate in the training of residents, which further benefits our community by ensuring that the latest medical treatment is available.
The Department of Pediatrics continues to do an outstanding job in providing clinical and continuity of care to the pediatric population of Kern County and actively participates in the training of residents from the departments of Family Practice, Emergency Medicine and Transitional Year.
Kern Medical Outpatient Services

There are 4.5 pediatricians and 2 neonatologists who provide care to the pediatric and newborn population of Kern County. The pediatric outpatient service sees approximately 25,000 patients annually. Monthly clinics are held in the subspecialties of Cardiology, Neurology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Nephrology provided by consultants from UCLA. The outpatient services have been moved to a new and updated facility – Sagebrush Medical Plaza – that includes Family Medicine Clinic and other supporting services to provide the utmost in patient care.
Inpatient services provide care for an average of 10-12 patients per day. Our neonatologists provide care for the neonatal services, which include the neonatal intensive care unit and normal newborn nursery. NICU newborns average 50-60 per month with 350 per month for normal newborns.
