Royce H. Johnson, MD,FACP

About Dr. Johnson

Dr. Johnson is the Chief of the Division of Infectious Disease in the Department of Medicine at Kern Medical. He also serves as Director of the Tuberculosis Clinic, Hospital Epidemiologist, Hospital Employee Health Physician, and Associate of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Kern Medical. Additionally, he is the Medical Director of the Valley Fever Institute, dedicated to fighting the battle against Valley Fever in Kern County.

Dr. Johnson has been with Kern Medical since 1975, where he served as Vice Chair in the Department of Medicine until 1987. He also served as Director of Pulmonary Function Laboratory and Respiratory Therapy Service, and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine from 1975-1979. He was a Private Practice physician with Kern Faculty Medical Group and was Chair in the Department of Medicine for 11 years. Dr. Johnson also served as the Director of Kern Medical’s Cancer Registry/Program for 16 years. He has been director of Hansen’s Disease Clinic since 2001 and has been Director of Quality in the Department of Medicine

Dr. Johnson has been a Professor of Medicine with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA since 1992. Prior to that, he was Associate and Assistant Professor of Medicine. He has also was a Clinical Professor of Clinical Sciences at CSUB. He held a courtesy staff position with Mercy Hospital and with Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Johnson is involved with numerous Hospital Committees. He has served the past 42 years as Chair of the Infection Control Committee and a member of the Clinical Competence Committee at Kern Medical. He has also been a member of Kern Medical’s Medical Executive Committee, the Education Committee, the Institutional Review Board, and the Joint Conference Committee. Dr. Johnson has also played an active role in the community; he served on the Board of Directors with the American Lung Association and was President of the Bakersfield Chapter from 1979-1980, he was Chairman of the Interagency Council on Smoking and Health, was Vice President on the Foundation for Medical Care of Kern County, and was a Board Member at CSUB Foundation. He is a member of the Association of Chairs and Chiefs of Medicine, American Society for Microbiology, American Federation for Medical Research, and many other societies. He is a fellow of American College of Physicians and Infectious Disease Society of America, and served as a Board Member, Vice President, and then President of the Infectious Disease Association of California.

Dr. Johnson has been awarded “The Best Doctors in America” on 8 separate occasions. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award CSG+ Infectious Disease Association of California, and received the American Red Cross-Kern Chapter Health Care Hero Award. He continues to be apart of lectures, publications, conferences and trials.
