Charles Y. Liu, MD,PhD

About Dr. Liu

Dr. Charles Liu is an accomplished and experienced researcher and neurosurgeon trained at the University of Michigan, Rice University, Yale and the University of Southern California.

Dr. Liu received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D in chemical engineering from the George R. Brown School of Engineering Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering at Rice University in Houston. He earned his medical degree from Yale University and completed his internship in surgery from University of Southern California-affiliated hospitals and his residency in neurological surgery from USC-affiliated hospitals. He holds a clinical fellowship in spinal surgery from USC-affiliated hospitals and a post-doctoral fellowship in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.

Dr. Liu received the 1992 Best Paper Award at the 10th Annual Conference for Biomedical Engineering Research in Houston and is a member of the Phi Lambda Upsilon National Chemical Honor Society. He was awarded the Congress of Neurological Surgeons’ CNS Margot Anderson Foundation Fellowship for Brain Restoration Research and was a USC Keck School of Medicine Baxter Scholar. He received the Young Clinician Investigator Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Anspach Research Award for Cerebrovascular Diseases and Cerebral Protection. He is an honorary member of the Hong Kong Neurosurgical Society and the Chinese Neurosurgical Society.

Dr. Liu served as associate team neurosurgeon for the USC Department of Athletics, providing neurosurgical consultation for Division I athletes in the Pacfic 10 Conference including the USC Trojans and former Olympians. He also has served as a consultant on medical-neurosurgical applications for the DURECT Corp. of Cupertino.

He is a member of the Neurosurgical Education Committee of the World Federation on Neurosurgical Societies. He has served in a variety of capacities for a number of professional journals and has served on professional boards and committees. He has lectured on a range of topics before international audiences and venues.  Dr. Liu’s ongoing research has covered a range of topics.

Dr. Liu is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Society of University Neruosurgeons, the Neurosurgical Society of America, the Pituitary Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers Professional Society and the American Chemical Society.
